Host organisation: CESVOV

Project’s number:
2010-IT-177
Main themes:European Awareness – Media and communication/Youth information
Project’s duration: 9-11 months
CESVOV’s role: host organisation

Description of the host organisation

About the project
The volunteers are involved in different areas of activities: working with the person in charge for each area, the volunteers have a specific training and gain new competences and skills.

Activities in which the volunteers could be involved and activities the volunteers could create

Cesvov's project is structured in two parts: the main one consist in activities within Cesvov's Communication, Promotion and Training sectors whereas the second one foresees activities in collaboration with some local associations which Cesvov has worked with several times (in local projects as well as within the EVS). We consider, indeed, that the collaboration with the territory and the local community is a fundamental part of the project.

As far as the activities within Cesvov's offices are concerned, the volunteers can be involved in the following activities, according to their skills and personal expectations and in agreement with the sectors' persons in charge:
COMMUNICATION

This area includes the activities which aim to offer information, news, documentation and data about volunteering.

- NotizieCesvov, websites, Facebook, newsletter, YouTube: the volunteers work on spreading relevant information for the volunteering sector at local, national and European level by publishing news on our websites (www.cesvov.it main website, www.go4europe.it European topics, www.cesvovpertutti.it disability), on our Facebook page and in our newsletter.

- Database: Cesvov has a database with about 2000 volunteering associations of the province. This database contains information about the associations, their activities and their field of action. The volunteers take part in updating and verifying the information on the database.
- Other communication activities: collecting press clippings from the local and national press about the non-profit sector, about topics related to solidarity and about Cesvov's activities.

PROMOTION OF VOLUNTEERING
This area includes Cesvov's actions and tools that aim at encouraging the growth of the solidarity culture and at promoting new initiatives of voluntary activities and reinforcing the existing ones, at local and European level.

- Projects for the promotion of volunteering: each year Cesvov carries out specific projects to encourage active participation of citizens in the civil life. The past few years, we focused particularly on projects aiming at introducing young people to volunteering activities (www.volontariatogiovane.it). The EVS volunteers follow each step of the projects carried out during their stay in Varese. That includes taking part in preparation meetings, helping during the organisations of events, contacting other partners, carrying out communication activities, ...

- Events for the promotion of volunteering: The volunteers take part in the organisation of the events Cesvov organises to promote volunteering and the culture of solidarity.

- EVS promotion and sensitisation to European issues: Being the reference point for EVS in the province of Varese, Cesvov is available, on request, to present the EVS, for example in local schools or during public events. The EVS volunteers take part actively in this activity, sharing their experience directly with local young people and giving them concrete advice.

- EVS blog (http://lnx.cesvov.it/sve): the volunteers write regularly on the EVS blog and become themselves protagonists of EVS promotion.

TRAINING
This area includes all training courses that Cesvov organizes for local associations and their volunteers.
- Training courses: EVS volunteers can take part in the organisation of training courses for the local associations' volunteers: setting up the didactic material, creating the certificate of attendance to the course, doing some administrative work like for example contacting the participants, managing their inscription, etc.

- Training database: Volunteers involved in training activities will also help update the data we have on the participants of all courses and have the possibility to work with the person in charge for the preparation of a report on Cesvov's training activities in the province.

WORKING WITH THE TERRITORY
Our experience has showed us that it is important for EVS volunteers, on one hand to have diversified activities, on the other to get to know different fields or themes and to increase their contacts with the local community and the volunteering world.
Here are a few examples of previous collaboration with the territory:

- Amici di Masolino e Dintorni: Cultural association which offers information and cultural tours in an old church of the medieval town Castiglione Olona.

- Associazione Banco di solidarietà alimentare: Food bank which collects and distributes food to needy families of Varese.

- Anffas CDD Bobbiate: Day centre for people with intellectual and relational disability who need assistance as well as educational and rehabilitation activities.

- InformaGiovani: Youth information centres which are located in different towns of the province and provide local youth with information on training, recreational, work and leisure opportunities at local, national and international level.

FURTHERMORE
The project also foresees:

- Support in general office work: The volunteers are integrated in the office's life and as such they also help with activities such as mailing, registering entering and outgoing post, database updating, etc.

- Personal project: The volunteers have the possibility to develop a personal project during their EVS experience. This project can be carried out within one or more sectors of Cesvov's activities. The personal project is planned, developed, carried out and evaluated by the volunteers in agreement with the EVS project coordinator and in close collaboration with Cesvov's staff.

- Final brochure: Each volunteer is asked to create, with Cesvov's support, a brochure which contains some quantitative data about their project but also a written testimony about their whole experience, with photographic or video documentation.

Accommodation
More information about accommodation will be given to the candidates in the selection phase.

Food
The volunteers receive a weekly food allowance.
Transport

Whenever local transport is necessary for the activities, the volunteers get refund upon presentation of the tickets.
Language course

The EVS volunteers will attend a course of Italian language which will give them at the end the opportunity to take a CILS exam (Certification of Italian as a Foreign Language). If they pass this exam, they will receive an official diploma from the University for Foreigners of Siena.

Holiday
Apart from weekends, the volunteers will also get off on public holidays. Should the activities take place during the weekends, the volunteers will have two free days the following week. They will agree with the coordinator of their project as to when to take the other days off (approximately 2 days off per month that they can accumulate during the whole service).

Host organisation: Association La Finestra

Project’s number: 2011-IT-34
Main themes: Disability – Anti-discrimination
Project’s duration: 8-12 months
CESVOV’s role: coordinating organisation

About the host organization
The association La Finestra was constituted in 1984 with the aim of fight against social exclusion of disabled people. Initially we only organised recreational activities during public holidays. Little by little a group of volunteers and parents of disabled people was formed with a common project. The main aim of the association is the social integration of all citizens, with particular attention to persons in situation of social exclusion like disabled people, through a service of training towards autonomy. We work on increasing the capacities, reinforcing the awareness, improving the potentialities, rehabilitating and developing abilities towards autonomy.

The objectives are:
•"use what you are": personal growth and autonomy of each individual to encourage his social integration
From "I'm here to help you" to "I'm here to work with you": cultural change of the relational style and of the concept of disability towards a collaboration that promotes and valorises the person.

Furthermore we have tried to emphasize more and more the aspect of social and territorial integration. Our philosophy is to allow each disabled person we work with, including the ones that cannot be active in the professional sense to have visibility on the territory. That is why we try to give to each activity a public dimension and a concrete aim of participation at the social life. This openness to the territory gives us the opportunity to collaborate with other associations in order to really integrate each disabled person giving value to what he knows and what he can do.

- Closlieu workshop: using the "game of colours", this new workshop has formal rules which facilitate the use of materials and is completely liberating when it comes to the production.
- Sewing workshop
-Wood workshop: the users learn to work with wood.
- Canteen: an educator has the specific role of assisting the users with the different aspects related to lunchtime.

MOTOR ACTIVITIES
- Swimming pool and gym
- Psychomotricity: the users take part in this activity to develop their awareness of the surrounding space and of their own body, to learn relaxation methods, etc.

Host organisation: AVIS Comunale di Varese

Project’s number: Awaiting new accreditation
Main themes: Youth information – Health
Project’s duration: 8-12 months
CESVOV’s role: coordinating organisation

About the host organisation
AVIS (Associazione Volontari Italiani Sangue – Association Italian Volunteers Blood) is a non-profit, non-confessional and non-political volunteering association that does not admit any discrimination based on sex, race, language, nationality, religion or political view and that pursues a goal of public interest: to guarantee an adequate supply of blood and hemocomponents to all the patients who need it, through promotion of blood donation, calls for donators, education to solidarity and healthcare of the blood donors. In this way, AVIS contributes to processes of health education and encourages preventive medicine.

The main activities of AVIS Comunale Varese aim to facilitate the insertion of new blood donors and to create strong bonds with the scholastic world in order to promote healthy ways of life. The activities are divided in various work areas: marketing on the territory, health and management of the donors, image and communication, school, administration.

AVIS is present in the major public events that involve the citizens of Varese with its AVIS Information Point. This allows us to spread the altruist message of blood donation. To intensify our presence on the public squares of the city with our Information Point means to let the people know more about our association and our aims.

The volunteers of AVIS Comunale Varese work together with other AVIS groups of the local territory to guarantee a constant presence at the Immunohematology and transfusion service of the Circolo Hospital of Varese through the “Punto AVIS”. The aim is to be present with the donors to help them feel at ease while donating blood and to give them the possibility to get information about the association and to ask any questions and express any doubts or perplexity they might have about blood donation. The Punto Avis is the link between AVIS, the transfusion service of the hospital and the donors.

AVIS Comunale Varese’s staff is composed of a part-time employee (19 hours/week), a board currently composed of 17 members (1 president, 2 vice-presidents, 1 treasurer, 1 secretary and 12 board members of which 50% is younger than 40 years old). Apart from the board, 37 collaborators (23 of which are between 30 and 54 years old) who help the various work areas to organise and project activities and we also work together with 2 doctors.

About the project
At the beginning of their European Voluntary Service, the young volunteers will have a training that includes theoretical parts on the Italian public health system, on the functioning of the transfusion service and on AVIS and its various levels of activity (national, regional, local). Furthermore, non-formal moments are foreseen to train the volunteers to welcome and accompany the blood donors (training through role playing, discussions, ...)

This training is carried out by expert volunteers with the support of professionals (psychologist and experts of the communication and “welcoming” fields). It is a specific course on the world of volunteering and on how to welcome whoever comes close to our association.
The EVS project foresees a series of activities that allow the volunteers to know different work areas of AVIS Comunale Varese. According to their personal interests and the skills they already have, they will have the possibility to get more involved in specific work areas that they can chose:

  • Promotion of blood donation and the culture of solidarity: participate in events to promote AVIS’ activities and to spread the culture of blood donation, participate in initiatives working together with other local associations, plan and carry out campaigns for the promotion of blood donation.
  • Educational project with the school: contribute in organizing projects to sensitize the youth on topics related to active citizenship, to their own wellbeing as a resource for the others and for themselves, to the value of tolerance, to the respect of themselves and of the others and to social integration.
  • Activities related to blood donation (Punto AVIS): welcome and accompany the donors (more specifically, the EVS volunteers can inform new donors and foreign donors on the functioning of AVIS Comunale Varese and of the donation in itself), supporting the donors as they rest after the donation, recruiting new donors, calling for donors, helping with office work, ... (no specific sanitary or medical activities are foreseen)
